Top 10 drunk-driving cities: California takes 4 spots

Posted on: September 28, 2010

Four California cities ranked in a list of top 10 hot spots for drunk driving convictions, which ranks cities nationally on where drivers were most frequently cited for drunk driving and related violations.

San Diego and San Jose ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively. San Francisco finished in 8th place on the survey of 20 major metropolitan areas by Foster City-based Insurance.com, just one spot behind the erstwhile City of Angels, Los Angeles.

Insurance.com, an online marketplace for auto insurance, came up with the list by analyzing information submitted by users seeking car insurance quotes over the last three years. The data included drunk-driving convictions and other alcohol-related violations.

The auto-insurance website said factors such as proximity to colleges and universities and other night-life hot spots could play a role in the rankings. Obviously, San Diego and San Jose take enforcing drunk-driving laws seriously, Insurance.com suggests, noting that drinking and driving in cities with tough enforcement programs enhances a driver’s chances of getting caught and convicted.

Drivers with suspect driving records in this regard face the prospect of higher insurance rates, plus the possibility of imprisonment and other penalties, the company said.
